BMW has revealed a redesigned version of the Series 2 Gran Coupe, which shares a lot with the 1 Series.
The German giant has done special work on the front of the car, there are new headlights, a redesigned radiator grille and a lower front end. The car is now slightly longer, but also higher.
The interior has undergone certain changes, the standard Curved Display is slightly turned towards the driver, and it is a pair of 10-inch screens.
The basic 228 has lost the letter “i” that was the “trademark” of petrols, and is now powered by a more powerful engine with 244 hp compared to 231 hp in the case of the outgoing model.
This model will be available with sDrive front-wheel drive and xDrive four-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive is expected in mid-2025.
Those who want more power can choose the M235 xDrive, which delivers 316 hp. The maximum torque in both models is 400 Nm and is available between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. That’s an increase of 14 percent compared to the outgoing 228i, but also less by 11 percent compared to the 450 Nm available in the M325i xDrive (2024).
The BMW 228 in the M235 uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine codenamed B48A20O2, but with different degrees of tuning.
The new engine is actually an improved version of the well-known power unit from BMW’s range, which now has an improved combustion system, direct and port injection, as well as the Miller combustion cycle. The same engine is found in the Mini John Cooper Works Countryman (2025).
Another big change is the ditching of the eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Power is now transferred via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The new transmission promises quicker gear changes, and M-Sport models also have a Sport Boost function that tunes the chassis and engine for “maximum attack” when the left paddle is pulled and held.
Adaptive M suspension is standard
It is also possible to get additional equipment such as the M Sport package, which adds M Shadowline tinted lights, a rear spoiler and more Shadowline details to the M Sport appearance. 18-inch rims are also standard, but it is also possible to get a 19-inch set with tires for all seasons, summer, and high-performance tires as an option.
The interior is more richly equipped, so the basic 228 gets more technology, Harman/Kardon premium sound system with 12 speakers, cloud-based live navigation, keyless entry system, wireless charger, automatic dimming of the interior and side mirrors, and all of this is standard equipment. .
All versions can be unlocked using an Apple or Android phone or an Apple smartwatch.
The aforementioned BMW Curved Display provides more technology via a 10.25-inch screen in front of the driver and a connected 10.7-inch panel. It uses iDrive 9 with the QuickSelect function, while upgrades are done over-the-air.
The interior doesn’t have it as standard, but it is possible to choose the M Sport steering wheel. The seats are sports, but not M Sport, which are available at an extra cost. For the first time for the Series 2, it is possible to get the function of massage and lumbar adjustments.
