Bertone presented the modern reincarnation of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept, the car that laid the foundation for the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Stratos.
Production of the Bertone Runabout model is expected to begin in mid-2026 and the car will have a starting price of 350,000 euros. It will be aimed at collectors and “those who appreciate style and excellent performance”.
This time the Runabout is not a “weird” city car concept, but a “full-fledged” supercar with a powerful V6 engine under the hood. Production will be limited, and the new Runabout marks the debut of Bertone’s exclusive line of models aimed at enthusiasts who want a combination of style and raw performance.
Staying true to the original, the new Runabout stands out with its distinctive wedge-shaped profile defined by an “L”-shaped line that runs from the roll bar horizontally across the body.
Up front are wide fenders that rise above a flat hood with vents, while a pair of pop-up headlights add a touch of nostalgia, but are also functional and necessary for road-legal status. Out back are round LED taillights, a sculpted diffuser and quad tailpipes.
Buyers will be able to choose between two configurations, the bolder Barchetta without a windshield and the Targa with a removable hardtop. There are two seats in the interior, and the cockpit has kept its minimalist style.
Red and black upholstery together with aluminum details emphasize the performance-focused design, while there was no exaggeration with high technology.
Details about the chassis have not been released, but it has been confirmed that it is a matter of lightweight construction and the decision to power the car with a non-electrified V6 engine mounted in the middle. This engine develops 500 hp, which is a huge step up from the modest 1.1-liter four-cylinder engine that powered the original concept and delivered 55 hp. The modern Runabout has grown, but has not lost its “wild” spirit.
“The challenge was to retain the spirit and purity of the original 1969 model while integrating modern, high-performance technology. The new Bertone Runabout is the perfect blend of design heritage and modern performance, created for those who celebrate the good life and driving pleasure,” he said. lead designer Andrea Mocellin.
