Mercedes-AMG super SUV long hood design

Mercedes-AMG has released a teaser announcing the arrival of its first all-electric SUV, which will debut in 2026.

Based on AMG’s platform, this model aims to go beyond the typical formula of adding special touches to a standard Mercedes SUV. Instead, it was designed from the ground up and has AMG DNA at its core.

The SUV is developed on the AMG.EA platform and will be sold as an AMG model rather than a high-performance version of Mercedes’ SUV. The brand’s insistence that “the model is AMG first, electric second” hints at a potential rethink of what a high-performance electric SUV can actually deliver.

The sketch reveals a few hints, a muscular profile, a long hood, aggressive fender lines and a roof line that seems to be inspired by that of the Ferrari Purosangue, but the design is definitely from AMG’s “kitchen”.

The AMG.EA platform features the 800V architecture and will be used for the upcoming and still unnamed SUV, as well as the electric successor to the 4-Door AMG GT. Both electric models will be equipped with lightweight axial electric motors, developed for AMG by the British company Yasa.

It is expected that the four electric motors will deliver 1,014 HP and will enable all-wheel drive, as well as the possibility of torque distribution. Also, the car will have a four-wheel steering system, active suspension and an AMG-specific battery.

It is expected that the size of the SUV will approximately correspond to the Vision AMG concept from 2022, that is, it will have a length of about 5.1 meters and a wheelbase longer than three meters. This means that it will have a wider wheel track compared to the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and that it will be closer to the all-electric flagship EQS SUV.

On paper, its rivals are at both ends of the powertrain spectrum, from the conventionally powered Porsche Cayenne GT and Aston Martin DBX to hybrid and all-electric rivals such as the BMW XM, Lamborghini Urus and Lotus Eletre.

More information is expected in the coming months.
